My name is Jonathan Monroe and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) with a master’s degree in K-12 School Counseling from Eastern Illinois University. I also have my Educational Staff Associate Certification (ESA), and continue to receive professional education and training in psychotherapy and school counseling theories and practices. I offer an eclectic style and integrative approach to mental health - well established in evidence-based practices such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Dialectical-Behavioral Therapy, Trauma Focused (CBT), Play Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Existential and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. I utilize an eclectic approach, meaning the work is informed by my training in various modalities of psychotherapy and tailored to the individual.
With over 20 years in the mental health field, my career experiences include; providing outpatient counseling for children, adolescents, adults, couples and families with mental health disorders, emotional and behavioral issues. My previous work environments have included settings ranging from in-home, facility-based, community mental health agencies and in school-based placements. I highly value the work and educational experiences I have devoted myself to over the many years, providing me with meaningful opportunities and a genuine connection to empower other individuals to live more meaningful and purposeful lives. My involvement within the social services and academia spaces over the years has taught me how to truly respect and understand the importance of always edifying individuals' spiritual, moral, social, emotional, and intellectual selves.
I believe that sustainable change comes from an exploration of ourselves and how we understand and acknowledge our own human experiences and the world around us. I have worked with individuals in a variety of counseling and educational capacities. I provide counseling services directed at helping people deal with depression, anxiety, stress, relationship issues, work and school concerns, self-esteem, sexual identify issues, and family conflict. I use a collaborative approach to counseling, implementing clients’ goals and value systems. I focus on the life situation of the person, couple, or family, including their successes and challenges as they pursue life goals. I help people to use their personal strengths to find new solutions to life challenges. My work experiences include; providing outpatient counseling for children, adolescents, adults, couples and families with mental health disorders, emotional and behavioral issues. My approach as a therapist is holistic and collaborative. I will assist you in clarifying your goals for therapy while I utilize my role as a therapist to facilitate your journey toward increased wellness as you create a future of your choosing.
The personal journey and adventures we encounter throughout our lives will inescapably bring about challenging experiences, especially when we feel alone and disconnected to our inner selves. The human experience can sometimes be tough making it hard to face the problems that seem overwhelming when struggling to have the courage to talk about your life's issues that come with strong personal thoughts, beliefs, and feelings.
As I continue to navigate my own life towards being more willing to grow and change, I find myself making it through the challenges of life feeling more empowered and hopeful, and I desire the same for those I provide counseling to. I thrive on the unique presentations of clients and enjoy the challenge of understanding and connecting with each individual with whom I work with.
